Oldest Active MMO ‘Tibia’ Gets Update After 25 Years
A major update after a quarter of a century.
Tibia, one of the first MMOs ever made, will receive a significant new feature in conjunction with its 25th anniversary.
This was announced by the game’s developer CipSoft, who confirmed that a sound update will be available next week.
If you're unfamiliar with Tibia, it's a German MMO that debuted in 1997, years before Everquest or RuneScape, and months before Ultima Online. Tibia may not be the first MMORPG ever, but it is one of the few online games from that era that is still active today.
Those of you who are familiar with Tibia may be aware that it has no sound effects or music for the past 25 years. However, earlier this year, the game’s creators announced that this will change, and that an upgrade is in the works and will be released at some time in the future.
CipSoft even made a film to commemorate the announcement, which included a tiny sample of numerous noises and sounds heard during one of the in-game battles as you can see it in the anniversary video below.
The creators have announced that the update will be released on September 27, and it will include a plethora of options for how players can play these sounds.
“It was crucial for us to provide you with choices, to give you various options to customize your own sound experience, to decide which sounds you want to hear and which you might want to mute. It will allow players to set the pace at which they want to explore this new and fresh aspect of Tibia,” said CipSoft in an announcement.
While this update may sound insignificant for the rest of us, it is great news for loyal fans of the MMO, especially after enjoying the game in silence for over 20 years.
