Why Astria Ascending is One of the Best Classic JRPG Experiences on the PlayStation 5
As classic as it gets!
Needless to say, whenever Sony comes up with a new console, it is sure to become a haven for JRPGs. So far, we’ve seen the likes of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Tales of Arise finding homes on the PlayStation 5.
But for those of you who want a more classic 2D experience, there’s no better game than Astria Ascending. A true evolution of the 16-bit era of JRPGs, Astria Ascending is more than just a rethread of genre conventions.
Taking place in a world where chaos looms, players take control of the Demigods, a motley crew of eight heroes charged with the fate of the world. These celestial heroes cover a wide range of diverse, from human-like knights to anthropomorphic birds and dragons.
The sprawling story of Astria Ascending was developed in part by writer Kazushige Nojima, known for his work on Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Just like Final Fantasy X, Astria Ascending features a colourful, multicultural world to explore.
Each of the eight main characters has their own storyline, which the player will explore across five cities and twenty-five dungeons. Players can expect up to thirty hours of gameplay, which can go up to fifty for one hundred per cent completion.
Astria Ascending also offers rewarding combat as players get to know each party member’s quirks and abilities while they are waging strategic turn-based battles using the innovative focus point system.
Along with the turn-based combat, players can try out a range of side quests and mini-games, including an original fantasy-themed token game, J-Ster. Similar to Triple Triad or Tetra Master from the Final Fantasy games, this is one minigame that will get you hooked.
Its not an epic JRPG without epic music, and Astria Ascending full delivers with music and SFX from composer Hitoshi Sakimoto of Final Fantasy XII and Valkyria Chronicles fame. Sakimoto similarly brings a sense of scale and adventure to the world of Astria Ascending.
